My favorite Maverick was James Garner, but Roger Moore made me swoon.
shareThey should have cast Rod Taylor, who read for the role of Bart Maverick, as Beau. He would have been a much better fit on the series than Roger Moore. The only good thing about Moore's tenure IMO was that he knew he was miscast and out of place and chose to leave the series when his contract with Warners expired.

In fairness to Moore, he did have a nice guest shot in a Season 2 episode entitled "The Rivals" in which he played a different role than Beau Maverick. This episode marked the only time all three actors who starred in the series (Moore, James Garner, Jack Kelly) appeared in the same episode. The final scene when Kelly made a surprise appearance was truly hilarious.

Did they have to explain Beau Maverick as a different person or did they just ignore the fact that he had been on the show before as a different guy? how was Beau introduced?
