Wow! I had almost forgotten that one about Beaver climbing up on the billboard! That is one of my all time favorites.
I also like the one where Wally and Beaver spend their savings on a hunting jacket for Ward. That has such a sweet ending.
I have all of the seasons on dvd so I guess that's the reason I know so many of the episodes.

I also enjoy Dick Van Dyke and Andy Griffith as well. I watch them on Netflix. Great shows.

It was actually a cup of soup. Come back when you start watching again.

I may have to watch Mash again soon.

reply

I loved the Beav. First sitcom that showed kids to be more realistic, and funny.

I'd remembered the ad as being for a cup of coffee too. Didn't it have steam coming out of the cup, or am I remembering that wrong as well?

reply

It was a soup advertisement billboard.

The kids were great. I think I like it because the stories are more or less shown through the eyes of children. We sometimes forget what it was like to be a child. LITB is a nice reminder.

reply

I read your post that it really was soup :). But, did it have steam coming out of the cup, as I remember, or did my imagination add that bit in?

I liked it for the same reason, which is why I think the show withstands the test of time -- both kids and adults can enjoy and relate to the plots and characters. In fact, the kids were far more realistic; the adults were pretty much caricatures of adults.

reply

So sorry I took so long responding to your question.
Yes, it was steam/vapor coming out of a machine.
The episode is from season 4. The title is, In The Soup.
I just watched it. There is a cup of soup. The cup may be why so many people remember it being coffee. Whitey urges Beaver to climb up and see if it's really soup in the cup.

reply

I grew up watching the Beaver. My favorite episode was the one already mentioned - Beaver climbing the billboard and falling into the cup of coffee.

I was pretty young the first few years it was on, so I mainly remember the second house the Cleavers had. When reruns of the early years came around I was a bit surprised to see that first house of theirs as I didn't remember it at all.

Life seemed so perfect for the Cleavers - house always spotless, nice car, nice house, nice clothes, friendly town, etc. Everything seemed so easy for them. Real life is hard, dang it.

reply

Yes, they did seem perfect. I think I like the old ones a bit better when the boys were young and they lived in the old house. Ward and June seemed a little less perfect and more funny. Ward tended to lose his temper more often.

It's from season 4. The episode is, In The Soup.

reply

Big time fan - I have loved this show since I watched it as a kid , and I am still a huge fan.

reply

I haven't seen any reruns in years so I can't recall specific episodes. But I do remember liking it.

The Beav and his friends got in all kinds of silly trouble. They were funny but they weren't the smart mouth brats you see on many shows today who are somehow "wiser" than their parents.

Well, Eddie Haskell was a smart aleck, but he knew enough to present a respectful (if totally phony) face to June Cleaver. "My, you are looking lovely today, Mrs. Cleaver."

I like the way he always called Beaver "squirt".

reply

I love the beaver! A great classic show! I used to watch reruns all the time on TVLand before that channel went bad. I hadn't seen the show in years til I got the dvds for Christmas. I wish cable channels aimed at kids would play old shows like this instead of their own original new stuff that portrays parents as idiots and the kids as in charge. I think it would help society as a whole to teach kids to be respectful of their parents like Beaver and Wally were respectful for their parents. When I was a kid, TVLand was the channel I primary watched. I watched Beaver, Gilligan's Island, I Love Lucy, Green Acres and so many more. They are so much better made than anything today.

reply

I HIGHLY doubt you like beaver.

Sorry, couldn't resist. And, anyway, I'm a Dennis the Menace fan. Much funnier, and not as COLD as LITB (prefacing
Mike Brady, Ward to had to coldly lecture the beaver at the end of every episode).

Let's be real: If Dennis came to his parents in the '70's, and said, "I'm gay", I think Henry and Alice would be devastated,
but they'd come around. If Beaver or Wally said, "I'm gay", Ward and June would DISOWN them.

That's the difference in how I view the parents. Ward and June loved their sons, but they were ICE CUBES.

Not quite sure of why you say you HIGHLY doubt that I like the beaver. Do you know something about me that I'm not aware of?
Everyone has their fave sitcom families. i admire the Mitchels a great deal. They had their hands ful with Dennis! LOL!
I guess I always liked the Beaver because the stories were told from the view point of the children.
I also remember June and Ward in the early days. They weren't always perfect. They made mistakes. They could be very warm and loving though at times. i still get misty at the end of that episode where the boys decide to take most of their savings and buy Ward a hunting jacket instead of something for themselves.
As for any of the boys coming out to their families, is anybody's guess. We're talking early 60shere, so I imagine it may be hard to handle for either family at that time.

Well, as usual, I didn't get the joke. I still don't. If it was crude, I don't really want to get it.
Somehow I find it hard to believe that was the case though, because gbnnett has always been a nice and respectful poster in the past..... of course, we all have our days. I know that I do.
Beaver isn't everyone's favorite. No big deal.
As you can see, I started this thread about a year ago when the site was fairly new. I was going around to some of the individual boards to drum up some conversations.
YAY! It happened today! LOL!

Oh. For a second there, I thought you was going to tell me that your kids thought it was a Lurch moment. (Adams Family)

I love LITB, and have always been a big fan. But if you prefer Dobie Gillis, you might check out the Bob Cummings Show (Aka, Love That Bob) as this one features a Pre-Dobie Gillis Dwayne Hickman, and is where he got his start. It also features Alice from the Brady Bunch, and I want to say that Ms Jane from The Beverly Hillbillies was in more than a few episodes as well.

Apparently Dwayne Hickman credited Bob Cummings as being a great inspiration to him.

You can find Love That Bob on YouTube.
Where are you getting all of these different fonts?

I was wondering about that as well. At first I couldnโ€™t figure out why MJF was replying in emojiโ€™s? (Most of it didnโ€™t come through on my tablet, and looked as if it were an emoji that didnโ€™t render). Sounds like a cool site though, so Iโ€™ll check it out. I like to write certain posts in Victorian font (mostly historically related type posts) so hopefully theyโ€™ll have that over at that site.

Yep, thatโ€™s what I got on my tablet. It probably wouldnโ€™t be an issue ordinarily, but I know that many people these days are only using their phones and tablets, and many donโ€™t even have a desktop/laptop, or an ISP at their house.

Of course I'm a fan. It showed us the world through the eyes of a child, how silly little things could seem to be a major crisis.

reply

โค๏ธ๏ธ
Exactly! That is what this show has always been about. Many people talk about the squeaky clean image of the Cleavers or the coldness of the parents.
The thing about this show is that children have all sorts of troubles like the ones we all had..... We aren't always able to navigate our way when we are kids. Parents aren't perfect either. When you really watch this show, you realize that June and Ward may have been better than most, but they still made mistakes. Why else would Wally and the Beaver keep having troubles? This show reminds us of what life was like when we were children.
