Gumby had black eyes until he got sucked into a vending machine

Then when he came out, he had red eyes. It scared and troubled me as a kid, in fact it still does today. How does getting sucked into a vending machine turn your eyes RED!?!?

Red eyes, irst, black eyes, second. Those foreign eye drops will do it every time.
