Did anyone buy the romance?

I'm sorry. I didn't!

Jack Lemmon is so young!
June Allyson is so.........mature!

It was a fun remake of one of my very favorite films so I am obviously going to compare the two movies.
I loved the music and Ms. Allyson's dance with the scarecrow. That was a treat. She is certainly no Claudette though!
While Jack Lemmon is no Clark, what he did with the part was actually a whole lot of fun to watch.
I just couldn't see these two as a couple though. Total mismatch

Anyone agree? Disagree??

I just couldn't see it.

It worked for me. The age difference didn't bother me at all. Jack Lemmon is so charismatic that I think he made June Allyson shine when another actor may not have fit.

I'm not sure if it was necessary to add songs to it though. I think June Allyson was kind of past her big band days and as much as I love Jack Lemmon, he's not much of a singer.

I agree with you MissMargoChanning! I didn't buy the romance and I didn't like the movie. Once again, Jack Lemmon played the same obnoxious character he always plays in every movie he's in and June Allyson. Oh, June Allyson, basically she's the female version of Jack - annoying! She also has the voice factor. Whether she's singing or just talking her voice is irritating; not a very pleasant experience for my years.

I don't think Jack and June have any chemistry and I have no idea why, with all the fresh faces in Hollywood, they would cast these thirty-somethings in these roles that were clearly meant to be played by younger actors. It changes the whole premise of the movie. If an almost forty year old woman has to be rescued by her father for making the wrong choice for a husband, something's wrong.

At that age, it just seems desperate and pathetic. Of course she's going to latch on to the next guy that comes along. Oh wow, how romantic (that's sarcasm if you didn't get it). Oh yeah, why the hell is that room so damned pink? Is she five? It's just bad; really, really bad. It's crazy how they think they can dress her in 'young looking outfits' and have her play a character who's about twenty years younger.

Jack Lemmon who is a bit younger also seems way too old for the part. Then again I think he always seemed much older than his age. There's nothing youthful about him. I'm not even going to compare them to the original movie. This is bad all on its own; even if there had never been an original. If things weren't bad enough, they added music. LOLOLOLOL, ridiculous! I'd better stop; I think I've made my point: I HATED it and yes, I can run away from it.

I bought it. After their initial exchange of words it was believable that he couldn't take his mind off of her and had a personal interest in what happened to her. It was believably romantic when he was able to spin it as a professional interest. I wasn't thinking about an age difference at first. Since I already previously accepted Jack Lemmon's character's attraction to Betty Garrett's character in another film, it wasn't a stretch to accept this one. It was believable that she opened his eyes and his heart to the possibility of settling down with her.

June Allyson is so.........mature!

Some of those hairstyles leading women wore during that time certainly didn't help them look youthful. In the '50s studios were gearing up to end their compliance to the Production Code and since films like this were adding racier material here and there, they seemed to make some the females as "girl next door" as ever in order to stay on the good side of certain movie audiences who still wanted the Production Code to be in effect.

Mag, Darling, you're being a bore.
