So Realistic Radiation Exposure

The reviews said this was so intelligent vis a vis radiation exposure. Well why didn't the little kid and the vicar escape unharmed when the monster was almost on top of them while the guards and soldiers melted like a candle when the monster was much farther away?

What are they doing? Why do they come here?
Some kind of instinct, memory, what they used to do.

I agree, the scene was included for cheap suspense. However, there was a stone wall between the monster and the and the Vicar with the child and the exposure was extremely brief. Still, the vicar would likely eventually die and the child would receive at least minor burns.
