What Happens After? (Possible Spoliers)

Once our heroes got the colony established on the outside, does anyone else think that they then went looking for other survivors? I think that they did, judging by what Dr. Galbraithe said to Timmek and the Council when they met the day after their arrival in the tunnel.
I doubt that they used XRM to do it in, but I am almost certain that they did seek other groups. If they look, did they find them?
I have my own answers but inquiring minds want to know: what does anyone else think?

gary overman: I am surprised judging from the popularity of this Film that no-one had picked up on this thread. Our opinion...

After establishing their new 'surface community' which looks very much like a nice suburb (good start) they would no doubt salvage the rest of the XRM. First though they should expand their perimeter and provide a defense against MUTANTS. I am sure TIMMEK and the Council have records of 'Fortress Towns'. We would base them on the VAUBAN 'Star System'. This would guaranty protection against the 'Primitives'. Continuous work on satisfactory weapons would continue in parallel.

Next, would be to liberate any 'Normals' from the MUTANTS and expand the area of control. As for the MUTANTS, once 'Normal Females' are liberated their reproduction will drop below replacement rate. Particularly since they are Hunter/Gatherers with no medical skills. Drive them off hunting lands of your area of control. This would continue until a area with a diameter of 1000K (600 Miles) with a sound road network.

Simultaneously Aircraft would be developed. Engines, Gas-Turbine, why, it is simpler then internal combustion pistons and can be fueled by almost any liquid combustible. Then using the 'old knowledge' and what the 'Past People' have, building Turbo-Propulsion Aircraft and Helicopters (Armed). These would be used for patrol of the secured area and explore new areas for occupation. The objective now would be to find any more 'Normals'. Either as independent communities and bringing them from 'under-ground' too 'above' civilization and liberated those subjugated by MUTANTS. Those who choose to stay below the ground, let them become extinct, just like the MUTANTS will become.

New communities would be built at a 500K distance from the border of the original community once it reaches a population of 100,000. These will be located at the optimum spot for such new construction. Like the ROMAN's, when a city reaches a certain level of density and productivity, build another. Let the Earth between be fertile, green and lush. Continue building from Continent to Continent. One World, One People. Teaching the History of the past to avoid the GREAT mistake of the past.

wreckerrr; I do remember something like that, but this is going to take some time. Your question is one of those that is going to BUG ME. The type that I wake up at 03:00am/0300hrs and say, EUREKA! I'VE GOT IT! Hopefully it will be really soon! Are you sure this it not a T.V. show from the OUTER LIMITS or the TWILIGHT ZONE or even TOHO?

Maybe they found a future space complex that survived the nuclear war with super advanced technology and nearly finished rocket and eventually returned home.... On those sort of movies you saw but dont know the title, does anyone remember one where a scientist had built a time machine and was trying to send people into the past, however he thought he was killing test subjects. The "bodies" were stored in a room and later all came back to life.

The odds of the 'Tunnelites', as I have come to call the denizens of the tunnel, being the only civilized survivors is very slim. There were, in all liklihood other suvivors and not just in 'Australia, Greenland' as Galbraithe said, but in the geographic USA.
Since not all of the survivors will have the same pacifistic attitudes of the Tunnelites, we can assume that some of them at least will be above ground, and some of them will have established thriving colonies. These will be the people that our heroes might be likely to contact.
Will they have radios, or advanced technology? Maybe not. Maybe they will be purely agrarian, perhaps even medieval. Since this particular film depicts a long period of undergound life, much of the prior technology may be forgotten, at least by some of the groups that our heroes come into contact with.
On the other hand, some groups might have retained the technology from the past and used it to protect themselves or perhaps to establish their control over small parts of the countryside.
In any event, our heroes will have made contact with other groups: this, I am very certain of.

Wouldn't they be more likely to start with lighter than air craft? I mean it's possible that ancient man built balloons way back (the Nazca Lines can only be seen properly from the air). And even in more modern times it was a good 120 years between the Montgolfier brothers first balloon flight and the Wright brothers 1st powered flight. If the men from our time couldn't build a revolver that worked properly in that future time then how could they be sure to be able to build an airplane engine? Knowing how one works and being able to machine the parts for one are two different things.

scribe1270: The problem was not building the Revolver it was the Powder they created, it producing unstable over-pressure, or there was metal fatigue in the Barrel as that is what blew up, not the cylinder. That would have been solved with more experimentation. Since the Survivors of the Cave had records of pre-holocaust Earth it would no need to go back to the beginning starting with Balloons. They would have the knowledge of basic flight mechanics and not have to start from scratch. As for the building the engines, they built the ones that generate power for their complex so their level of manufacturing and technological accomplishment was quite sophisticated.

Now as for "Nazca Line", you do not have to have a Balloon to construct them. Nor need one to be motivated to build them, if you believe your Deity lives above you and looks down. Assumption that they had Balloons (or Space-Craft) is based on specious logic.
