Why did the astronauts have backpacks, camping equipment, heavy hiking boots, and guns when it was clearly stated at the beginning of the movie that their mission was only orbital?

Why did the astronauts have backpacks, camping equipment, heavy hiking boots, and guns when it was clearly stated at the beginning of the movie that their mission was only orbital?

The best guesses of several other posters here besides yours truly, was they might crash on earth in either a wilderness area, or in hostile territory.

Did you spot the large axe clipped to the back of the belts? A must for every astronaut :)

Part of the survival equipment. Also, a tiny quibble, if I might: it was actually a hatchet, not a 'large axe'.
