World Without End ( 1956 ) officially on DVD??

Hello ~~

Does anyone know IF / When this solid gem from the 50's will be Officially released to DVD? I have bought it off ebay but the copies are just so-so and I would love to see this one remastered for my collection-

Thank you!
ZD

Frankly, your guess is as good as mine.
I'd love to see it out on DVD as well, as would at least one other frequent poster here. The problem that I have heard about it is that all reels may not be available in Cinemascope, as they may have lost one or two of the final reels. So, Pan&Scan may be all we'll get.

This was one of my favorites when growing up. I saw it in NY on Chiller... Theater...! I have the pan and scan VHS copy, but would love to have it on DVD. Come on, I have that "tree" horror film, "From Hell It Came", on DVD, so what is the hold-up with this?

Have you tried eBay? They probably have it, but most of them are likely to be Pan and Scan.

HEY GARY -- Yes! WWE is out on DVD!! Today! I have it! See my obviously-titled new thread for details.

Just remember Hob; if you want it to be really authentic, we should all bring our Smith & Wesson M&P revolvers with us.
Which means that we had better not have the celebration in New York.

You obviously haven't been in NY lately!

Hi Zorker -- No, you didn't see WWE in NYC on Chiller Theater (channel 11)...you saw it on channel 9 in the 60s, then 2 in the 70s. It made its film debut in I believe 1963 on Million Dollar Movie and they showed it in its full-screen BUT un-CinemaScoped format (i.e., everyone and everything was squeezed together, the raw CinemaScope film without being reconverted into widescreen, "normal" view). Later on it was in a p&s format when shown on Super Adventure Theater, Science Fiction Theater (both 9), and then, after it moved to 2, on the Late Show (or Late, Late Show!). Great TV in the NYC area back then! Regards.

Where did you hear the part about Sept.? I assume you mean it will be available at stores/online stores, other than BestBuy, in Sept.

Tom Weaver (an authority on classic sci-fi movies) recently posted a message at the link below (The Classic Horror Film Board) stating that both World Without End and Satellite in the Sky were being release as a DVD double feature, exclusively sold at Best Buy. I called Best Buytoday, but they don't have it, nor does the Best Buy web site say anything about it.

I bought a copy at my local Best Buy today. $16.99 for the double bill. I have watched about half of the World Without End and it looks and sounds great. The transfer is very good. No extras, but the two movies itself are enough to satisfy me.

Got to get back to the movie.

Are both movies in widescreen? And how does "Satellite" look? I held little hope of every getting a good DVD of either film (especially "Satellite") so this is a dream come true for me!

I ordered it through Best Buy (for store pick-up), so hopefully I'll have it by this weekend.

Saw your post, Bud_Brewster, and hope you don't mind my answering....

Yes, both movies are in widescreen. The sound and picture are excellent. SATELLITE had almost seemed to have been lost so I was very surprised when I saw it was the second feature on the disc.

As you undoubtedly know, for decades that film has only been seen in poor TV prints that not only were pan & scan but black & white to boot! (Even a VHS I briefly got in the late 80s had such a poor, fourth-generation print, p&s and b&w, that I returned it for its terrible "quality".) To see this film in its pristine original color, widescreen print is really a revelation. I've actually never been a huge fan of it but I must say it's vastly more enjoyable when you see it properly. It looks very good, in fact, so I think you'll be happy with it.

Same with WORLD WITHOUT END, one of my all-time favorites. I also used to wonder whether there's ever be a decent, widescreen DVD of that one, but here they both are. Enjoy!

Hope this helps -- hob.

(PS -- I went directly to a nearby BB and found these DVDs under new releases. A lot already seemed to have been bought, judging from the emptying shelves. Maybe hoarders/scalpers are trying to corner the market in hopes this release is brief and a wider one far off, so they can profit from them on Amazon or ebay as they did with the two Universal Sci-Fi sets the past couple of years.)

To find this movie on the BB website, search for "Sci-Fi 50s". The only place you'll find the movie's title is on the box art.

Warners will be releasing these "Sci-Fi Double Features" to all on October 7, 2008. They'll retail for $19.98 each. So wait until then. You'll find them everywhere and cheaper than the retail price.

This is released officially with another old Sci-Fi movie Satellite in the Sky, both on one single sided DVD. I got it on Ebay (or maybe it was Amazon) but it's definitely available. Satellite in the Sky is not such a good film.

In color, and widescreen, the transfer of World Without End is very good. The only defect is at the very end credits the music warbles. This is probably because the transfer was done with a copy of the film that had optical sound. Anyone old enough to have run a movie projector in the 60's knows that warbling is caused by uneven (or worn) footage running through the optical head. The sprockets of the film would widen with repeated usage so the optical track would wobble (shift a little sideways) and cause a warbling sound.

I love this movie. As a kid I would watch this on Million Dollar Movie, late night Fridays in New York. We only had a black and white TV set so I was pleasantly surprised to discover years later that this film was in color. This film holds up very well and when I watch it now I still enjoy it. A "B" film to be sure but everyone making it took it seriously and tried to make an "A" film out of it.

How about a remake with Tom Hanks playing the Hugh Marlowe role?

I'd go along with that, but just hope that they retain the Smith & Wesson revolvers.

Unfortunately, it is not. There, I agree with you.

BTW, in case you don't know this, hobnob53, one of the more frequent poster on this board, is also from New York. He is a very fine gentleman.

Liked this movie in a kid....used to be on WOR-TV 9 in NYC all the time in the 1960s. I haven't seen it in decades. It's pretty bad. The effects are cheap for a color cinemascope film. Glad Taylor was able to graduate to better films.

reply

That's right, WOR first ran it on Million Dollar Movie around 1963. At that time there was apparetnly no pan & scan version around because channel 9 ran it in CinemaScope -- but not widescreen. Instead, they showed the entire film in its "squeezed", un-anamorphic look, the film as it was on 35mm stock before being unsqueezed by the lens back to normal shape for widescreen viewing. So everybody looked about nine feet tall and very, very skinny! But you did see the entire picture, however distorted...something never again seen until the film came out on DVD in 2008 and TCM began running it.

But I disagree that this film is pretty bad. It's really pretty good. Sure, some of the effects were a bit dicey, but this was 1956 and a medium-budget film after all...not exactly The Martian sixty years later. WWE was the first sci-fi film shot in CinemaScope. That and color were big deals for a small studio like Allied Artists, so credit where credit is due.

In the late 90s I went down to the film forum in NYC to see this movie at their last science fiction festival. I'd never seen it properly and was looking forward to it. Unfortunately, when I arrived there was a notice that they didn't have the final reel of the film in 'Scope so would substitute a pan & scan print for those last ten minutes. (Despite this they didn't lower the admission price!)

Anyway, the audience watched the first 7/8 of the movie in its proper widescreen format. Then, the film was interrupted, the screen went dark, the curtains were drawn to accommodate a 4x3 image, and the film resumed (with a bit of overlap) in a p&s print. Because of the reel change the image was a bit blurry at first, and as often happens in such cases someone in the theater called out, "Focus!"...whereupon someone else yelled out, "Width!"

DVD NOTE: The two-film disc with Satellite in the Sky released in 2008 is still available separately, but this disc is also available in a four-film set (TCM Greatest Classic Films Collection, Sci-Fi Adventures), along with The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms and Them!, those two also released separately as a two-film disc (and before that, individually). The TCM set is usually cheaper than the single, two-film releases, and you get four great 50s sci-fi movies...okay, with Satellite in the Sky, three and a half.
