In the last scene when Dana Andrews character is reading the paper about allthe promotions he reads that Mildred (a good reporter) has been "promoted" to be Loving's administrative assistant? Did I hear this wrong? I sure hope so because shwas the reporter who got the biggest scoop in the movie.

No, you didn't hear that wrong. That's the job she ended up with, which was a bit odd as like you said she got the biggest scoop, and incidentally was by far my favourite character in the whole film :) They at least could have made her an editor or something, but we have to remember when this film was made. If there is ever a remake she'll get more than an assistant job :D
