Solid Western

Quite enjoyable. I don't care what most critics say, Murphy was a decent actor. This film is one of his best. Interesting to see Anne Bancroft and Tommy Rall as Native Americans.

The reason I like this Audie movie so much is because it's based on a true story. John Clum was, in fact, an indian agent and later was involved with Wyatt Earp and operated a newspaper in Tombstone AZ. I believe it was called the Tombstone Epitaph. I love movies about "real" people. And, your right, Audie did a good job in this movie. Of course, Audie is my hero so I'm going to say that, right? Right!!!!

It is a good Western flick. John Phillip Clum's life is very interesting. A lot of corruption preceded his arrival at San Carlos. His time there was a tug-o-war between government officials, the army and Indians. Captured Geronimo, became the first mayor of Toombstone, AZ, became a lifelong friend with Wyatt Earp. The newspaper he founded, "The Tombstone Epitaph", is still in existence.
He died in Los Angeles in 1932, His descendants still reside in the Los Angeles area and in Carmel and Rancho Mirage, California.

Yeah, it's an interesting perspective on the closing of the American Indian wars. Props for trying to portray the Apaches in a more nuanced fashion than other fifties horse operas.
