sharecarrying it in that situation would be complicate and dangerous. As you see, a hook was enough to clear the way.

just prior to killing the guard Fontaine abseils down a wall with a hook in his belt buckle. But then he puts the hook on the floor because he felt it just didn't feel appropriate(?)
And then we see him bare his hands as he attacks the guard. So he probably strangled him.
And I looked & I beheld a pale horse & the name that sat on him was Death & Hell followed with him.
