A quick question:

What an amazing film!!!

There was one quick scene I didn´t get though: What was that about Jost, and his "infestation" with lice? Why did Fontaine seem surprised at his somewhat cryptic answer, and why did Jost examine Fontaines jacket afterwards? Was their banter a code that revealed to Fontaine, that Jost was on his side? I didn´t get it...please explain if you can.

I admit that was a little confusing. But the way I read it was that because he had lice, he was probably telling the truth. That is, the Germans probably would not have sent in a spy with lice in his jacket. It made Jost's story more believable.

reply

Ah! Thanks for clearing that up for me, it bugged the hell out of me because there was obviously a point there, that I just couldn´t grasp, even though I watched the scene something like 4 or 5 times. LOL!

Ah yes, the subtitled translation kind of fell apart there didn't it?

Any French speakers out there care to provide us with a more understandable translation of what they said?

reply

That's funny, I just watched this (incredible) and this was the part that threw me for a loop too. Something got lost in translation somewhere.

reply

yup, i also (mistakenly) thought it was code, like Fontaine asking about Lice and Jost providing the correct answer, so Fontaine knows Jost's not a spy.

really interesting character by the way, Jost, too bad that actor never played another role.

The translation from french to english is right.

I thought Fontaine was only joking with him, and to Fontaine's shock, Jost confirmed he really was crawling with lice.
