The Thing I Love About This Movie...

Is that the title nearly completely spoils the ending, and yet the film is STILL incredibly tense and suspenseful the entire time.

That is god damned fine craftsmanship right there.

Would not "death" also be an escape of sorts? An unfortunate one, but still an escape.

I suppose it could, though that kind of ironic wordplay seems more common in titles of films today than it did in the 1950's- at least in my limited experience.

Perhaps you both need to think about the second part of the title : why did Bresson add it ? what meaning does it carry for the film ?

Spoiler Alert:
As it was called "A Man Escaped" I was still wondering if one of them died or didn't escape towards the end, especially when I saw what the hook clipped on.

Well, in a way, he "escaped" during that early moment in which he decides he will get out. The rest of the movie is him willing his body to follow to his mind.
