Americans played swing, big band music to immigrants escaped from Nazis?

there is a scene when family trapp awaits papers in new york.

in the room, swing or big band music was playing over speakers, interrupted here and there by announcements.

such details surprise me

europe was mostly poor, dead serious and dull, america was even then a modern easy going state.

nice touch by family trapp singing alp music in the same room though.

I don't think Europe was dull. There was plenty of music in Europe, and singers and musicians of all kinds. Big band music would have been quite familiar to European immigrants.

but in a time frame - when war started in europe it was cold i bet.
think of people who left everything behind and were witness to widespread violence, death and murders - escaped from that and find themselves in government room, playing dance music
