Hysterical mess!

This was the first UK film that Losey directed under his own name; it is remarkable in that he manages to get three well regarded actors, M.Redgrave, L.McKern and J.Plowright to give hysterical ranting performances that are almost certainly a career low for all of them; what a mess!
To answer a query on the other tread, it has recently shown on talking pictures which is available in the UK, or to anyone who has a Sky box.

Very messy indeed. It might have might a suitably-melodramatic after-dinner 1950s theatre piece but it's SO contrived it makes very little sense. A few decent actors were wasted and I'm glad that the appalling Kenneth Williams didn't get cast as the self-hating son.

Talking Pictures have still got this on their schedules. They showed it on Monday. Now they are a Freeview channel perhaps more people will get to see this movie. I admit it does get quite theatrical but it is compulsive viewing. Any viewer will need to see how this story is going to end.
