Okinawa

I'm curious what Okinawans thought of this film. It depicts Okinawa as an agricultural region untouched by the modern era. No paved roads, no electricity, no street lights, no cars, no modern clothing. I can't believe Okinawa still looked like that in 1946, when the film is set.

Nor is there any sign that just a year earlier Okinawa saw some of the worst fighting of WWII and lost nearly half its population. This was the worst battle with the highest civilian casualties to occur on Japanese-occupied territory. Not a mention of it in the film, nor any signs of the war's devastation. All seems to have been forgiven.

Was this film based on an American officer's actual experiences in postwar Okinawa? Or was it complete fiction from the start?

Thanks.
