I agree, truewyatt. I had been wanting to see this movie for a while and I just watched it this morning. It was wonderful and it begins to pinpoint where all things went wrong at least for us in the present.

Besides everything else that was excellent about this movie, I loved Marlon as Sakhini, can anyone share the details of Marlon being cast as Sakhini? I'd almost guarantee that he was originally scheduled to play the Glenn Ford role, yes?

Many years ago I read a Brando biography that critically appraised his film as well. This one came out badly so I never tried to watch it until now. It's a great film and whilst Brando's performance contained flaws I enjoyed him and everyone else too. It is warm and humorous. There were many moments when I LOL'd. I think this film was a brave choice for Brando as he was not playing according to type.

I can understand an older Brando likely to be somewhat embarrassed about taking the role of an Okinawan, even if it was in 1956. If the film was being remade today, I'm sure it would be an Asian actor taking the role of Sakini. But the fact remains that Brando, IMO, did a pretty reasonable job, avoiding overplaying the character and descending into farce. The film itself was quite influential, with later films like MASH and Local Hero clearly drawing upon ideas floated in its storyline.🐭

Funny that Harry Morgan played the Radar role in this film.

I was in the play in high school but had never seen the movie. The movie was far superior in showing us the spectacle of what appears to be more Japanese than Okinawan culture as only a movie can and was really sweet.
