The ending is so bad, makes no sense at all

So the town is clearly so dumb. They still don't get it after the public show down with the kid calling Alicia Hull a communist a thousand times, never even asking themselves how a kid would even know what a communist is.
A couple of hours later, suddenly, while watching the library burning, everybody has suddenly changed their mind and want her back?
This town nowhere near smart enough to learn from this. I would have suggested that something was cut from the movie but what, there is no space for a missing enlightenment between the fire and Alicia's big speech. Unless there was something between the dedication of the new wing and the fire that is.
Also Alicia's speech at the end, yes it's nice but, what didn't you do the first time around? Tie yourself to the library? There is nothing she could have done, unless she was going to drag some other people down with her and in the end, who knows if people would have seen the light at the end?
Stupid town, stupid people, will never learn.
The scary thing, this movie could have been filmed today as well, things haven't changed.
Another thing that makes no sense, why didn't anyone complain about Mein Kampf being on the shelf?

I agree...this film shows that HALF our country has not progressed one iota, but has fallen further back into the Dark Ages, full of bigotry, stupidity and evil....The Rethuglicans.

I was just thinking, this movie should be just taken to make you think and get the message. Kinda like an after school special. The message and loud and clear.

Could you explain your comment in the context of the movie?

If it weren't for me reading newspapers at an early age & asking my parents questions, I wouldn't have known what a Communist was until about the 5th grade which for me was 1964-65, or age 10. They didn't teach it before then, at least not in our schools. After that they taught all the nitty gritty concerning the subject and forwarning that we've been under the threat of nuclear attack for a long time.
