Aeroplanes in the movie

In the mid - late fifties no Messerschmitt 109s were available for movie purposes from the warbird private collections. As already found in the "Battle of Britain" epic movie (done, however, about ten years later) we can see here various Me 109s "rented" from the Spanish Air Force , who operated Hispano built Me 109 examples, named Buchon, until the mid sixties. The interesting difference between the Messerschmitts used in the WWII movies up to now is that these Hispano 109s are the very rare ones with the Hispano engine and not the ones with the ubiquitous Rolls Royce Merlin , that was installed on the Sapnish planes after the Hispano engines demise. As a matter of fact, the Spanish changed engines for their nimble Me 109 fighters from the original German Daimler-Benz DB601 and DB 605 to the indigenous built Hispanos, up to the final English RR Merlins . The Merlin was the most famous WWII aeroplane engine and equipped several fighters planes and bombers, like the Spitfire, the Mustang and Avro Lancaster, among others.
Finally ,in the movie we can admire a genuine Fieseler Fi 156 Storch and a lot of crude wood-made models representing Hawker Hurricanes and Messerschmitts in the combat shots.
The Marseiile story is sincerely recreated and apart the plane models, the movie is a very good one.
