I don't think JD would have been miscast, horribly or not. He had great volatile energy, he was interesting to watch, and he could show pain and joy like no other actor at the time. But, he crashed and died, worse luck. Remember how he fought wildly against his brother in East of Eden, outside the house?

Would have loved to hear Dean try that Lower East Side accent.

Short Cut, Draw Blood

I did not know that...I would've loved to have seen him play this one, not that Newman wasnt great, but damn.

Ya, and it was going to be in COLOR> ugh!(Trivia notes). Also wasn't Dean shorter than Newman? These are MW's, 160 lbs. As great as Dean was, I just can't see him improving on Newman in any way. Dean's death, the end of one mercurial career. The beginning of another, Newman's. Amazing piece of cinema history. What would have happened to Newman's career? "Long Hot Summer", "Cat on ....", "The Hustler", "Hud", etc. Jeez, I don't want to think about it!

reply

Newman's good. But he'll always be second best as long as James Dean is around.
