Irrelevant Title

This is one of those stories where there's no connection between the title and the plot, though it provided an excuse to have the final shot in color.

I actually love the title - of course beyond the fact that it's memorable, it's something you forget when you are watching the movie and then the final scene plugs it into the picture which is a surprise and a delightful ending .

Has anyone ever seen the play? It CAN'T end the same way the film does, or does it? Also, I looked up the original Broadway cast, and Fred Allen, the comedian, is listed as the narrator. Did Allen actually show up at the theater eight times a week, or were his lines recorded?
"We're fighting for this woman's honor, which is more than she ever did."

reply

Gratitude, it isn't irrelevant.

reply

Agree. Very strange title. And the fact that the couple accepted a gift of such wanton opulence from their stockholders when so much good could have been done with the money seems to fly in the face of the whole message of the film.

reply

Not really. ... Laura's compassion and understanding in corresponding with the stockholders endeared them to her. It was her reward for being a big-hearted person who also was very bright, although she's portrayed her intelligence in the very Billie Holliday way. Loved it!!!
