Is the publisher gay?
Seems like the movie is sending signals that the publisher, played by Steve Cochran, is a self-loathing gay man. The silk robe, the devotion to his mother, the dinner dates with mom, etc.

You are probably right, so let's cut out this nonsense.
Anyway a wife would have made the movie longer but not better.
Well, either way, it's fine whether or not H.R. the Publisher is Gay because he's still the same character either way, and his orientation ought not to make any difference.
If he's Gay, then that goes to show how very talented Steven is, and if he's not, then he's still very talented to be able to play Gay like that while allowing entertainment for audiences along with ambiguity for censors.
Tolerance is very important to show some respect to the poor less fortunate.
If he's gay then that makes the dialogue (I'll take you to a ball game) between him and the boy extra creepy.
