Shooting at the Sheriff's - SPOILERS

When Greer is shot in the back, it really doesn't make a lot of sense. Bodeen shoots him right in front of the Sheriff's office to prevent him from telling the Sheriff what's up? Either way he's going to have the Sheriff after him.

We even see someone come out the Sheriff's door when the shot is fired, so he's saved himself exactly zero time and trouble, and added a murder that's easily provable to any charges he may have faced.

Why wouldn't he have just run off instead of shooting Greer? Bad temper, sudden impulse? It seems doubtful, since it had JUST been established that he was calculating in ridding himself of rivals and didn't lose his head when Masters confronted him in the saloon.

It allows the character to make a sacrifice and frees the woman up to be a love interest, but other than in service of plot necessity it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.
