The DVD is out: 7/29/08

Confirming the news, SATELLITE IN THE SKY is now out on DVD, part of a double feature with the time-travel drama WORLD WITHOUT END. No extras of any kind, however. But the good news is that this appears to be the first time since its initial release in 1956 that SATELLITE can be seen in widescreen and in color -- all TV and even VHS prints were pan & scan and only in black & white.

At present it is a Best Buy exclusive, though it'll go into wide release on October 7.

I bought the BestBuy double feature, and the movie is MUCH better than I remembered. BTW, the CinemaScope print is pristine, and the one for WORLD WITHOUT END is very good (though not in the same league). This film is one the best space adventures ever made. To approximate that subgenre, I'd include "Destination Moon" and "Conquest of Space" among other notables.

I thought Satellite was better than I'd remembered it, too, as I said in some post somewhere. But I don't put it in the same league as the two George Pal films you mentioned, two of my favorites -- especially Destination Moon, a pioneer sci-fi film. I too was impressed by the quality of the prints of both films, especially since I'd only ever seen SITS in lousy, pan & scan AND b&w prints -- anything would look good after that. But I thought the WWE CinemaScope print was as good as the other. That's also the first time I've seen that w/s all the way through.

I got it not long ago as a 4 movie collection of Turner Classic Movies. The other three movies are: Them, The beast from 20,000 fathoms & World Without End.

Yes, that combined set (of two previous double-feature DVDs) has been out for a couple of years, and is a great collection.
