Ah so! is this where Karate Kid took the idea from?
shareI would guess so. That's certainly the first thing that came to my mind. I just looked at the "trivia" section on the IMDb page for The Karate Kid, but it didn't mention that. Still, i'd guess so.
Ironically, Toshiro Mifune auditioned for the role of Mr. Miyagi in that movie. So that only strengthens my opinion that it was Mifune who inspired that.
