Did he keep the girl?

My DVR-R cranked all three movies of course this one right to BEFORE the ending. The last scene I have is the Mifume in the boat, can anyone tell me what happened after that? Its not due to be shown again on HI-DEF in the foreseeable future, and its not available at Blockbuster. Thanks for any help.

Are you asking what happened after the duel or what happens after he gets on the boat to *go to* the duel?

reply

after the duel, my DVR-R stopped before the ending.

reply

His friend on the boat just tells him he's glad he survived.

I'm sure they got together for two seconds then split up for two years only to repeat this until one of them died.

More than likely Musashi did stay with Otsu. I say this because the scene before Miyamoto goes onto the boat, headed for Ganryu Island, he asks Otsu to take a walk with him. There Otsu breaks down once again and tries to persuade Miyamoto not to fight. Musashi then tells Otsu something along the lines of "Get yourself together, the wife of a samurai wishes her off happily". Otsu then gets what Musashi is hinting at. So given the fact that we (the viewers) know that Musashi did in fact beat Kojiro and survived, I don't see any reason he wouldn't have gone back to Otsu. The two probably continued their life together and Miyamoto continued to train Jotaro.

*I'm not exactly sure if there was a special woman in the life of the real Musashi Miyamoto, if someone has any knowledge on that, I'd be much obliged.

I think the question here is what happened on screen? I had the same problem when I recorded the movie off IFC. I got parts one and two through their ends, but on my part three, Miyamoto is back on the boat after killing Kijiro and is being rowed back to the mainland. The rower says he is sure Otsu will be glad he survived, the music starts up in an ending crescendo way, the sum looks like it's finally going to set, there's a close up of Miyamoto and then the film cuts out.

So, is that where the movie ends, on the waves, with Miyamoto lost in his contemplation, or does he make it back to the beach and to a waiting Otsu?

reply

That is where the film ends. I too was waiting for the formulaic embrace on the beach at sunset but we do not get that.

I own the dvds and let me tell you i wondered the same thing. I was honestly hoping for footage after the credits but no closure, just speculation or fanfics.

I'm sure he did. Right before he left for the duel, he made it clear that he intended to marry Otsu. I assume he did so right when he got back.

But yeah, you're asking what we saw happen, so in that case you didn't miss much. He got on the boat, the rower talked about how relieved he was that he didn't have to transport a corpse, and then the film ended.

Pretty sure the real Musashi died in a cave (by choice) and lived a pretty solitary lifestyle. He did have kids though right?

Maybe that's why they don't end the movie with them in a warm sunset embrace.

In the blu-ray supplements, William Scott Wilson mentions later duels Musashi fought, and winning, but was always still a ronin rather than serving any master or clan. He did have children, so I suspect that he and Otsu did indeed forge that relationship.

Poor Honiden Matahachi. Once engaged to Otsu, is a reluctant warrior (with good cause), made to be a drunken fool in part two and not even mentioned in part three!
