Good and not so good

It's a good story in concept but some of the specifics of the plot were weak. In particular the characters all do some really stupid things from time to time.

However, it was good to see this sort of story done both more plausibly than some comparable ones and with some art. Widmark delivers as always, his monologue exposing the Englishman being both a highlight and one of those stupid things his character should have known better than to do.

In all though a satisfying adventure story aimed more at boys I suspect than at adults, complete with its wilderness threats, boy scout solutions and the mention of how girls can't do that sort of thing: "He made the mistake of taking the girl! They'll leave a trail even a child could follow." Because, you know, women don't know how to walk. Everyone knows that. At least, not without leaving a swath of destruction behind to mark their passing. Right?

"I'll book you. I'll book you on something. I'll find something in the book to book you on."

And much as I liked Jane Greer in the part, all she really did in the third act was play the epitome of a damsel n distress.🐭
