Was Trevor Howard's character based on a factual incident?

There was the scene where Latimere systematically exposed Browne (Trevor Howard) for having been a turncoat during WWII, essentially resigning from the British Diplomatic Sevice and defecting to Nazi Germany where he made propaganda broadcasts. I was curious if Browne was based on a factual character/real event?

There were several British men who turned coat and supported the Nazis. Do a google search on William Joyce, AKA Lord Haw Haw. Also check the British Free Corps. Browne struck me as a composite of Joyce and John Amery, founder of the BFC.

Thanks. I'll check it out. In the movie it sounded too real to be pure movie fiction, so I assumed Browne was based on a real character or, as you point out, a composite of several people.

It was neat the way some factual elements were utilised to make the story more realistic.🐭
