It seems fairly realistic. There are lots of Mamies out there who have a drive for money, are lots of fun, and have all the makings of a blue chip spouse,but they can't get out of their own way when it comes to being faithful or settling down, as their identity is tied up in their fun side. I can see how Jim and Mamie would be great together, so the ending is kind of sad, but also foreshadowed, as Mamie makes mistake after mistake, even while she has totally given her heart to Jim. She's not a huge hearted character to begin with, yet it's not her heart, but her actions, which ultimately betray their relationship. Which is why Jim doesn't even get very mad at her,he just walks out of her life, knowing they both love each other but that it's a dead end. At least if his goal is a family, kids, and an emotionally stable home environment.

I agree.....good explanation.
He just couldn't trust Mamie......even though he was cheating right in the face of the other lady who was his steady love interest before Mamie came along!
Did you notice when he was away serving in the Army; Mamie's letters to him were about her making money.....and the other love interest in his life...her letters were encouraging him to hang in there; everything was going to be alright.
"OOhhhooo....I'M GON' TELL MAMA!"
