This movie really was ahead of it's time.

I started watching this movie on tv from pure boredom, but was quickly absorbed in it because of the fine acting, plot, scenery and music. The acting was all very plausible and didn't smack of being overdone in the least. The rebels weren't portrayed entirely as clear cut villains, with the exception of the murderer, but rather as men who were desperate and left with no options. The acting in this movie was first rate, and I don't care what anybody says, that includes the two children (Bobby Clark as Peter Willoughby and Mimi Gibson as Lisbeth Anstadt). All through this movie, I kept asking myself how it would have felt to have been anybody involved in the incident. But that's the goal of a good movie -to have you imagine such things, isn't it? I highly recommend this movie to others who haven't seen it.

I'm not sure if this was really ahead of its time, but otherwise I must agree with everything the OP says. This is a tight, taut little western with a much more than usual plot, well acted by everyone taking part. Ben Cooper especially makes very much of one of his best roles. I believed everyone and felt the moral issues were well-depicted. I second the high recommendation for this modest jewel.

Not me. Count me out. J. Carrol Naish was one of America's finest character actors, but in this he wasn't convincing at all. With his fake mustache and lame southern accent, he made no good reb I ever saw or heard. There were no cap pistols in that era either; they are an invention of the 20th Century. Also, ending was trite and didn't even make good sense. Since when does an entire family of bank robbers get to ride off in the moonrise? A dull B movie oater with a very tired John Payne and a truly awful soundtrack.

To understand is the opposite of existing.
