To those interested, I won't tell the end of the story, but they found the plane...

Yet another reason I wish that I lived in Britain! All those historical things on TV never get shown over here.

reply

I saw this but am puzzled as my opinion was that they did not find the aircraft

SPOILER-Brilliant documentary "Who Downed Douglas Bader" which I watched last night.Although they couldn`t find Bader`s aircraft they ascertained that the wreck was probably in a lake and that he was most certainly shot down by a friendly, although Bader himself always stated that he collided with an Me109.Poignant moment where they find a downed Spit with large parts of the cockpit and give the widow her husband`s flying helmet.

No unfortunately not. They do provide quite convincing evidence that Bader was shot down by one of his own colleagues who mistook him for the new Me109 F or G(can`t remember which)which had a similar profile to the Spit unlike it`s predeccessor.Records state that during the engagement British pilots confirmed two definite kills although German written records reveal that only one Luftwaffe pilot was shot down and killed. Why then did Bader lie and claim that he collided with an Me109 which was the official version? The Me109,which Bader allegedly hit,was discovered, although there was no evidence of a crashed Spitfire nearby. The programme claims that he did this to perhaps save face or to safegurad morale maybe realising he was the victim of "blue on blue".Imagine the German propoganda coup if it were found one of Britain`s top aces had been shot down by his own side.Interesting theory indeed.Incidentaly the prog also shows some pics of Adolf Galland and Bader laughing and smiling-mutual respect in times of war. Still lots of ifs, buts and maybes and the conclusive answer would possibly be found in the wreckage of his aircraft, which despite extensive searches, couldn`t be located. It`s known that Bader`s aircraft crashed in a field in Northern France but exactly where is still a mystery. The programme put out adverts in French newspapers for any eyewitnesses to come forward if they remembered any British planes crashing during the war-a very long shot but a few elderly farmers pointed out some locations and two Spitfires were found. The programme makers also identified a lake and apparently that is the last possible place where the plane could be.I supose the dredging operation would have been too expensive as they didn`t carry on the search.

As I understand it he parachuted out the plane with one leg attached and the other ,still attached, was badly damaged or broken in half. The British sent a replacement during a bombing raid.

The other leg (the one that stayed in the airplane when he bailed out) was found on its own in a field near the location where Bader's plane was downed.

This lends credence to the theory (espoused in the great book that followed the "Who Downed Douglas Bader TV show) that the plane essentially broke up in the air, which is more typical of a plane that has lost its tail. Being all of a sudden aerodynamically unstable, it dives forward and undergoes tremendous negative G's. A corroborating fact is that Bader had tremendously bloodshot eyes for days after, which is a sign of strong negative G's.
