Why was he not in this movie? Two words: Col. Parker.

Elvis was so good in his screen tests that he actually won the role. However, the almighty Colonel Parker decided that Elvis should pass it up because the character was a half-wit and that it wouldn't be "good for his image".

It's a shame.

If that is so that was a big mistake but Earl Holliman tore up that role and should have got an oscar and maybe Elvis would have too. I have heard that he was offered the Conrad Birdie role in Bye Bye Birdie but the Colonel nixed that too. A second mistake. The Colonel did a good job in Elvis career guidance but these were two mistakes if he made them. Elvis would have been great in Bye Bye Birdie.

So far I've only seen one movie in which I thought Elvis was actually an actor. By that I mean he played a character that wasn't just another version of himself. I don't claim to have seen all his movies so there may be others; I just have yet to see them.

Of the movies I've seen in which he appeared, he did a lot of singing but the acting was lacking. I don't completely blame him because he gave what the role and the director called for him to give. He came across in many of them very flat. He was often a dumb, often country, bumpkin who could only sing and attract girls. They were painful to watch.

If he played a role in this movie, it would have been the same old thing. For that reason and because I think he would have detracted from the story, I'm glad he was not in the movie. However, in regards to Bye Bye Birdie, that would have worked. I think the problem might have been the character.

If I recall properly, there are scenes in which Birdie did not come across so well. His manager would not have liked that as it might have left a bad taste in the mouths of his fans. If that wasn't it, maybe he thought the character was too close to home and people might confuse the two. It could also have been a breakdown in negotiations; perhaps he was asking for too much money or too many other perks.

I am fairly sure Elvis did not appear in any movie in which the producers or studio did not pay Col. Tom Parker a separate signing bonus separate from his management fees (as well as give him a screen credit as technical advisor).

When a producer balked at this, there was no project.

I always wondered how it would have worked if Elvis teamed with John Wayne in TRUE GRIT, or instead of Rock Hudson and a bunch of NFL football players, he and his body guards played the southerners against John Wayne's movie regulars in the lighthearted THE UNDEFEATED.

Probably because he couldn't act his way out of a wet paper bag.
