Blu-ray from Kino 12/2/14

Kino-Lorber has confirmed December 2, 2014, as the street date for its release of The Quatermass Xperiment on Blu-ray on its new KL Classics line.

The disc retails for $29.99 and contains no extras.

This BD is part of Kino's ongoing series of UA titles previously issued by MGM. This is the first release of TQX on a pressed disc in the US. Note that Kino is not releasing the film on standard DVD as well, which it has done with all its other UA titles. But the MOD DVD from MGM is still available and is very good.

The Australian Blu-ray release of The Quatermass Xperiment is very good and comes with the added bonus of Quatermass 2 and X: The Unknown. All three look great on Blu-ray, but it will be interesting to see what Kino can do. However, the inclusion of the brilliant sequel and X: The Unknown, which is a real gem, makes the Australian release essential, in my opinion.

That does sound like a great set. Unfortunately there are copyright issues in the U.S., meaning rights to TQX are owned by United Artists but the other two are controlled by another company (not quite sure who at this point), so all three films are unlikely to show up from the same distributor here.

Anchor Bay had excellent DVDs of both Q2 and XTU, both now out of print, but they either no longer have the rights or are simply not interested in issuing older titles on Blu-ray.

X the Unknown was supposed to have been a Quatermass film but the BBC wouldn't allow it so Hammer changed the name of the main character. A thin disguise!
