Did Colonel Black really know Lee's husband?

Early on, he tells Thelma Ritter he didn't know Ashley and she tells him a little bit about him. The colonel later uses these same vague facts when trying to convince Lee that he did, in fact, know him and know him well.

I thought it was a scheme to win her over. Wasn't it?

Yes it was, he did not know her husband. However I thought it was wierd that after he wooed her it wasn't brought up again

No, the Colonel did not know her husband. What he did is called "cold reading." Stage psychics do it.
