'Pride can kill a man faster than a bullet'

“Pride can kill a man faster than a bullet.” One of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite westerns. Robert Ryan and Jeffrey Hunter star in this classic western about a marshal with failing vision who trains his deputy to be his successor. Very good story with great acting and great screenplay. This would truly be a quality movie in any genre. And yes, it has its share of good gunfights and showdowns with an ending that will make you smile. 3.5 out of 5 action rating

I saw this for the first time recently and was generally favorably impressed. It had a number of original, offbeat aspects for 1956, such as the straight and narrow marshall being at odds with the supposedly good citizens of the community.

However, I feel the story and characters needed to be fleshed out. Had this been done I believe the film would have been even more successful. In a fairly rare starring role, Robert Ryan gives a solid performance. He really does carry the film. Unfortunately, the fine character actors, Walter Brennan and Arthur O'Connell aren't utilized to good advantage. Of the supporting cast, Robert Middletown (the main villain) comes off best, partly as his character is fairly interesting and well written.

A rather unusual music score as well, with the whistling main theme.
