Staples Question (Spoiler)

Was kind of disappointed that he didn't quit. Would have liked to see him beat the *rap out of Ramsey, and dump his brown-nosing, social climbing wife, too, but I'm sure Rod Serling knew what he was doing.

reply

Yes the ending really threw me, never saw it coming. I haven't been in the corp world in a long time but I've heard it has not changed. I guess Serling was giving Heflin's character revenge.

Well, truth be told, the story as originally written by Serling ended just that way - that is to say, Staples had one final conversation with Ramsie and then resigned. If you can find the "Golden Age of Television" dvd mentioned elsewhere here, Fielder Cook discusses the change in an introduction to the television episode, a change which Serling agreed to, of course.

Thank you both for your replies. Thank you, doug650h for the heads-up regarding "Golden Age of Television".

"No, I don't like to cook, but I have a chicken in the icebox, and you're eating it."

reply

You're quite welcome.

reply

Care to say more about it? I'd hate to have to buy the DVD just to get that one piece of info. Why did Cook want to change the ending and why did Serling agree?

reply

I liked the ending.

Quitting would have given Staples momentary satisfaction. But it was too late to help Briggs. And Ramsey wouldn't have cared; he would found a replacement.

By staying, Staples would be in Ramsey's face continually, and might even eventually wear him down and change his policies.
