It is indeed a tough one to find. You can usually find a VHS copy on ebay. For DVD heads, here is a tip. Go to http://www.cinemacom.com/ and you will not be disappointed. It is not an official release, not specially restored, not digitally mastered, but it is decent quality.

Since I saw this film on the big screen (1:2.35) ratio as a child, during its initial opening, I haev only known it to have been broadcast ONCE on television/cable. That was some three or four years ago on Turner IN Widescreen. Beautifull print too. If I'd only known ahead of time it was to be aired. I also have only the full-screen VHS copy, which I recently transferred to DVD+r. I consider it one of Tracy's finest and most nuanced performances. Many hardened rock-climbers rate its climbimg scenes as among the best ever to come out of Hollywood. Too bad. So many fine films lying about in the shadows, unavailable to the general public in their original formats.

SPOILER

Instead of the DVD, you should go get the book. This movie was orignally a french book (which is the one I read) and I hear there's an English version. The book is much better, the movie made too many changes. In the book, Zachary has a mental problem from falling off the mountain 3 times. Eventually he goes insane, and I won't say much more, but it's a pretty neat book.

Thanks for the info, I'll check it out. List of books I've read which were significantly 'better' than the film would stretch to the horizon.

Classics like this should be a no brainer when thinking of DVD's to put out.

Wow, I just came to this movie's page after just catching this fine film from a vhs. I have never seen the tv prints. Can't believe it is not on any sort of dvd release. It is a good film with nice cinematography and very good effects for its time imho. I hope that even better then DVD it comes out on Blu-ray. It is in Vistavision and seeing how The Searchers looks on blu-ray I hope this movie can receive the same treatment.
