After viewing the film, I came here and was surprised to see him called "Shark." Where does this information come from? No character names are mentioned in the leading credits, and there are no trailing credits.
He is called "Chark" at every instance in the subtitles on the DVD.
Although "Chark" is not a French word/name, it would be pronounced "shark" in French. My best guess is that this is some sort of error in phonetic transliteration, but anyone who wants to look into this further should look into José-André Lacour's novel upon which the film is based. Unfortunately, I don't have access to a copy at this time.
