It's not

You ever seen it ?

It seems boredom is it's own punishment.

Oh yeah, chasing down REAL whales on the ocean and stabbing them with harpoons, risking your life....how boring! I almost fell asleep while doing that once.

It's not. I first saw the movie on TV when I was six or so, and enjoyed it (although the image of just the whale's eye looking back at you gave me nightmares).

Ironically, I think the book is a tremendous bore. I had to read it in high school senior English (twelve years after I first saw the film on TV), and the teacher cut out fully 1/3 of the novel - the detailed descriptions of the actual whaling. I still went to sleep over it.

My father, who loved to read, especially for the knowledge, described Moby Dick as one of the most boring books he ever read.

Having a story labeled a "classic" does not mean it's readable. However, it can be made into a good film. Think of it as video Cliff Notes <g>.

It's NOT a bore at all. Whaling? Nantucket sleigh ride? Come on!
When I was young I read it more for the whaling parts. When I was older, I read it more for the philosophical parts. Now I just think it's one of the greatest books ever written and the movie is very faithful to it.
