Old Ahab and young Ishmael? WTF?

Gregory Peck was about 39-40 when he played Ahab, and however it's ok and believable playing an older character, but Richard Basehart was 41-42 and doesn't seem young at all.

Do we really know how old Ishmael is?? I had the impression that he was fairly young but had already been around and seen the 'earthy' part of the world when he decided to check out the 'watery' part.

Well, during the film, Ismael is called "young man". I don't remember in the novel, but I always thought he was young, in his twenties.
Get the subtitles here:

open them with Notepad and look for "young man", so you can check in which part that happens.
