Moulin productions

Walter Mirisch's bio says Warner released the film for seven years after Moulin produced it, but never said if Moulin was paid a share of the profits, only that ownership of the film would be theirs when 7 years ended. Why wasn't Moulin paid for a film they made and covered the extra costs? Why would they agree to produce a movie without being paid?
