There are major differences. The film is a straight narrative, while the novel is an allegory of life at sea; the meaning of evil and the whiteness of the whale woven into the fabric of Captain Ahab's mad quest and Ishmael's journey into self.

The novel seemed to me, when I read it, a true biology book about the life of the whales, and the way they are hunted, killed, taken apart and worked.
In the film there's almost nothing of this.

I saw this film first, then read the novel, and felt like you did. All that stuff in the book about catching whales and getting the oil, etc. was dense, difficult and rather plodding but the movie eliminated much of it and focused on Ahab's obsession of getting Moby.
