The Old Lady with the Beard

Was just watching the movie again on Netflix after not watching it for many years, and the old lady at the beginning stood out seeing as they lingered twice on her face. What was the deal with the beard? Was this a common practice at the time in the dock's locale? Was this something mentioned in the book?

I just saw this part on TV and was like "oh my gawd!" I know women can grow some hair on the upper lip that is usually waxed off but this lady has a goatee!

Almost all of the whaler wives were impressive, it makes me wonder where they found all those old hags, their close ups and everything was outstanding, very realistic.

Re the old lady with the beard: The lady in question was my grand aunt and lived in Youghal Co Cork in Ireland.I wish that you would have a little more respect for old people. This old lady was an absolute beauty in her younger days and died in 1960 aged 80, six years after the film was made.Anyone looking at her can see the good looks that she once possesed,I dont think that a wisp of hair should be an issue

One should never call women "old hags." The phrase demeans them, whether in life or on film.

I love that part of the movie. It's a shock to see real old people in a film.
