Sepia color of film?

Was this movie intentionally filmed in muted brownish color. I guess it makes the film more depressing, or classic.

It does look different

I'm startled to see it in any color since the first time I saw it was on B&W television. I retained very little of it except the chasing down of the whale. So, enjoyed this recent airing.

I, too, got to know this movie in black and white in the mid-60's on New York's "Million Dollar Movie." I didn't see it in color until the mid-70's.

I guess my question is why? It's such an ugly film because of it.

I thought it wa sbeutiful and perfect for the film. I Think it's prpably because of atmosphere, the didn't want to make it black and White but not completely in colourr either.

The color is muted but it isn't sepia (which was used in the Kansas segments of "The Wizard of Oz").

The color was achieved by combining a color negative with a black-and-white negative, and was intended to emulate period book illustrations and prints.
