So where was Art fighting in the Paciific?? (Spoliers in here)

SPOILERS.

So Art is killed in July of 1942, based on the letter sent by his commanding officer to Ruth. We know this was in the Pacific. But even in Europe and North Africa nothing much was going on with U.S. land troops. There certainly was nothing occurring in July of 1942 in the Pacific, other than AUSTRALIANS fighting in New Guinea.

I supposes this is the kind of question I shouldn't bother to ask, right? ;) I guess I am a stickler for reality even when maybe I shouldn't be.

If she got the letter in July, he may have died on one of the ships in the fight at Midway in June. It may have taken a while for them to get the letters out. I don't see anything substantial that happened until Guadalcanal in August of that year. I missed that part when she received the letter. Did he say he died in July - if so it may have been from injuries sustained at the Midway battle.

I saw this film today on TCM. The letter states that he died on July 6,1942.
