Jonah Complex

I saw this picture back in the early 60's and was glad to see the familiar face of Lon Chaney, Jr.

Even as a boy I could see the special FX were cheapjack but it DID give me nightmares.

Swallowed by a giant fish! Yow!

I was fooled by the title. I thought it was going to be about a half man/ half fish thing and the circus that bought him for the freak show. I was way wrong, but I wasn’t disappointed. Things I enjoyed about this film:

1) Apart from Barbara Nicols voice, I enjoyed Barbara Nicols. Obviously that was not her voice in the singing number.
2) Apart from Tessa Prendergast’s eyes, I enjoyed Tessa Prendergast.
3) The skeleton under water clutching the bottle (which appeared to be floating?)
4) The way it suddenly turned to a Hitchcock movie as soon as the professor kills the captain. These two characters have been wanting to harpoon each other so badly, they didn’t think about what to do with the body after.
5) Swede’s disinterest in the treasure allowed him to be happy with no qualms about the fortune he could have had.
6) Did any one else notice how the trident looked like a cartoon when they threw it at the shark?

On a final note, I would also add that I have never ever ever seen a film that desperately needed to be in color as much as this one. All the shots of the underwater coral reefs went to waste because it was black and white.

And they never stopped boozing it up!

I saw the picture once and only once many years ago and it was not a title I was desperately searching for or wanting to acquire or otherwise see again. Now, after reading your comments I should like to see it again. I'm sure it is not a lost treasure, but I do like W. Lee Wilder's stuff. I think he tried to make entertaining movies with only some talent and very limited resources.

Thanks for your views.
