These two deserve each other.

It's very easy for Betsy to judge and stand on her soapbox when she doesn't have the financial responsibility of a family to support, and has probably never had a job in her life. Frankly, the Gregory Peck character was not any better when he said the Italian woman (a mother of one of his children) could be misconstrued as a prostitute. These two deserve each other.

"What's this regarding, Mr. Grizzle?"

You are right...two birds of a feather !

that was a terrible thing for him to say.

reply

That's not what he said. It was more along the lines of "I could claim she's a prostitute so I wouldn't have to pay child support, but I won't do that, I'll do the right thing and support the boy". Poor choice of wording but, strictly speaking, he didn't say or imply that Maria was in fact a prostitute.

reply

Agreed. He chooses to do the right & honest thing, which includes telling his wife, something many men wouldn't have done in those days.
