Intellegence gathering is a shred here, a scrap there. Then, put together with educated guess work. The German officer was right to question the authenticity.

O'Reilly's inquiries were what you would expect. He confirmed where the shirts came from, but not that Martin bought any there. He got nothing from the club, but, as he was told, it isnt uncommon that they would have incomplete records. The bank didnt confirm anything either. And so it goes.

The whole spy plot was fabrication, in reality the Germans were convinced the documents were genuine. It would be very foolish to have someone doing inquiries all over London, and that way reveal they have knowledge of the invasion plans.
