Gauguin

How accurately do you think the relationship between Van Gogh and Gauguin is portrayed in this film? I had sort of understood Gauguin was even crueler to Van Gogh in reality.

I dont think gauguin was cruel I just think van gogh thought gauguin and him were much the same and the thought of them being together painting would be bliss they both had the same sort of life but in gauguin case he had learnt to control himself with his emotions and being alone was all he wanted van gogh couldnt do the same as he didnt know how to control his emotions his curiosity and obsession for life got the best of him..which i think made him the better artist...i especially like it when gaugin and him sit down for a drink and van gogh begins to paint and talks about him painting a cafe or something of the sort and says how he would like to represent a dark area in the room where a man can lose his mind and do ill things...awesome movie....never seen nething like it...and the philosphy gauguin brings is fantastic...ive read quotes his elsewhere these were true artists too bad the world isnt the same nemore where men could travel withouth the knowlege of passports and what not...and the fear of a bomb attack...or terrorists...people acctually lived...todays world ure lucky if u have a passion for something...

Yes, Gauguin was much crueler in real life. A disgusting human being.

Which is why I think Quinn got the Oscar.
It was a phoned in performance hardly any nuance or great line readings.
His character was all bold, selfish and materialistic. Very much like the American male was expected to be. Shameless.
Everett Sloane's performance as Dr. Gachet was far more worthy of credit and indeed the best performance in the film.
I think what hurt the movie was the lack of any humor. Art is a boring subject and most artists are eccentric to a fault so humor is not difficult to find. But all the people in this are pitied and this makes for a pathetic story.

I got the impression Gauguin just got fed up with Van Gogh's needy, whiny shit. Can't really blame him.
