It is essential for herds to be culled, as overpopulation in various regions would become too difficult for the region to support. When animals become too populous, whether deer or bison, they can be attacked by disease, various types of flies, etc. What hunting did in the past was to keep populations in control. It was the abuse of hunting that led to the problems, people killing for the sake of it or simply for a trophy of some kind.

I attend period reenactments, including the fur trade era. There you will see tents that offer furs for sale of legally harvested animals.

Modern thinking sees this as a major "no no", but culling is an essential practice. Before I arrived at IMDb, I was guessing there would be at least one of these reactions.

I am not a hunter and likely could never hunt~unless my family needed to eat. I will not condemn those who hunt to provide food for their families, as many do in this region; and, I will not condemn those who are trying to keep herds in good condition instead of overpopulated and starving for lack of ground upon which to graze. "Bambi killing" bothers me when they take down animals that dress out to the size of, say, a collie or slightly larger dog; but, there are people who aren't out there for trophies but, instead, feed themselves and their families while helping thin out overpopulated regions.

I think the usage of this footage is acceptable when balanced with what this movie has to say about that period in history.

Have you ever "readed" that typing in all caps is screaming. No one cares what you think when you scream it..Your opinion is as valid as anyone's when given in a rational manner. Try it sometime.

I guess it's like looking at clouds. You see one thing and I see another. Peace.

I had a feeling that the actors were doing some of the killing. The buffalo fall in exact sync to the actors shots and I doubt they could have done such a perfect sync job like that. The last buffalo, the one Robert Taylor kills, skins and freezes in, was clearly shot at least once by Taylor. He's standing over it and shoots it with a pistol and the buffalo jerks from the shot.

Either way though, who cares? They kill millions of animals for food per year. Here a few more are killed, I can't see it as such a big deal in comparison.

I'm vegan by the way and people aren't going to suddenly respect animals right to own their own lives though hostile actions and rhetoric.

Do you understand the concept of movies? Things that don't really happen are made to look as real as possible. For instance, according to Robert Osbourne's commentary on TCM, this movie was shot during hot weather. What looks like snow really isn't and the actors have to look as if they're freezing cold and shivering when they were actually wearing layers of heavy coats and coping with very hot, hundred degree, weather. Do you also realize that the people that were killed in the movie really weren't dead even though it looks like they were?
